The low-down on high-profile cleaning

Floor cleaning should always be effective, but in some sectors and situations customers need to see it being performed professionally too, says Stephen Pinhorne, UK National Sales Manager at Truvox International, who outlines the lead role of the modern battery-powered scrubber-dryer.

For the hotel or leisure facility manager, there tends to be only one challenge greater than meeting customers’ exacting expectations of cleanliness. That’s actually delivering them under the noses of that discerning audience as they watch cleaning in progress.

In any intensively used building, such as a leisure centre, some daytime cleaning will be essential. And in the hospitality sector, guests’ sensibilities have to be considered night and day. Either scenario demands high standards of professionalism in all aspects of the cleaning operation.

In our experience, these are also arenas in which the scrubber-dryer most clearly demonstrates its utility, and all the more so with the advent of modern battery power.

From Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Pool to hotels on England’s south coast and beyond, the versatility and productivity of Truvox scrubber-dryers has made them the workhorse of cleaning teams in the leisure and hospitality sector as they wash, scrub and dry in one pass, leaving floors that are both clean and safe to walk on.

Apart from cleaning standards, the variety of flooring in many buildings poses a notable challenge. Tiles at the poolside and in kitchens, marble in foyers, wood in gyms, dance floors and dining rooms, rubber and safety flooring on stages and in other areas are just some of the permutations. A Truvox scrubber-dryer – such as the Mulitwash or Orbis models – can take these and more in its stride, including concrete, terrazzo, slate, stone and composite vinyl surfaces.

The Multiwash can even clean escalators, travelators and entrance matting, as well as soft floors and the more run-of-the-mill ‘difficult floors’ like rubber-studded flooring and laminates.

Floors are constantly under attack from grit and soil on people’s footwear and other sources. But apart from the visual impact of dirt and stains, there is a contamination risk. Crevices and cracks in any floor, and grout lines between tiles, are fertile breeding grounds for bacteria.

So there is a powerful case to be made for a machine that can wash, mop, scrub and remove the dirty solution, leaving floors clean and dry in a single pass. Truvox scrubber-dryers leave floors safe to walk on in minutes – and clean to a level beyond other methods.

The gains in cleanliness and efficiency are most stark when compared with hand-mopping, which still persists in the sector. Mopping is laborious as well as ineffective, causes greater disruption to building users, and poses a slip risk on damp floors.

By contrast, these scrubber-dryers apply sufficient pressure to clean thoroughly in grout lines and other crevices, achieving reliably high standards of hygiene. The scrubber-dryer’s brush action propels the contaminated liquid into a holding tank so only clean solution is applied to the floor. The efficiency of the process reduces the volume of solution required dramatically, so there are valuable savings in chemical consumption too.

The Orbis Battery Scrubber has a 38cm brush/pad diameter and cleaning path, with a powerful brush speed of 130rpm. With a 17-litre solution tank, it has a large capacity for this class of compact scrubber-dryer and outputs to match. Around 1100m2 can be cleaned per hour on a battery run time of 80 minutes.

Even more compact, the Multiwash 340/Pump Battery, has a 34cm cleaning width. It uses twin cylindrical brushes, counter-rotating at 400rpm to achieve a productive 350m2 per hour with a run time of 50 minutes.

Not only can the Multiwash mop, scrub and dry under obstacles such as tables, it offers the added versatility of cleaning carpets as well as hard surfaces.

Being cordless, both machines allow cleaning teams to move freely without risk of tripping passers-by with cables. A quick-change battery system allows their range to be extended easily. The sealed gel batteries are maintenance-free.

The machines are also well balanced and ergonomically designed so each is easy to operate and control. Switching brushes or pads, filling solution tanks, emptying the recovered solution, and cleaning the machine are straightforward. This makes it easy to train new team members, who quickly get up to speed.

As the cleaning team works around the building – and often literally, around its clients – they have reason to admire the results as well as the professionalism of the cleaning operation.
